The Natural Refrigeration

The ioMosaic internal relief valve project and others like it are funded by the Natural Refrigeration Foundation, which is supported in large part by the Foundation’s Legacy 100 Club, a new way to contribute to the work of NRF.

The Foundation’s Legacy 100 Fund is built by contributions of $100,000 each from companies or trustees who wish to induct one of 100 leaders of the refrigeration industry into the Club. The commitment can be funded by an individual, a company, or a foundation in the name of an individual, giving contributing companies a seat at the table in determining important industry research like the ioMosaic project.

 “This is a good example of using NRF funds to solve a problem,” said Eric Smith, IIAR Vice President of Technology, Advocacy, Research and Publications. “NRF is supporting the industry and its standards because they have been challenged. The ability to generate data to support our position on a topic is a key example of why the NRF exists.”

In the case of the internal relief valve project, “the research is being conducted because the industry has been challenged to determine an appropriate time interval for replacement of pressure relief valves with outlets that are piped back into the system,” said Chojnacki. “Unlike relief valves that discharge to atmosphere, valves that relieve back into the system are believed to be reliable for an indefinite period, because they are not subject to internal corrosion.”

“With this research, we hope to establish that such valves will not fail and require no routine replacement, or to determine an appropriate interval for their recertification or replacement using predictive analysis engineering methods.”
